愛と悲しみの地蔵「愛童将軍地蔵」(English below)
伊豆市の玄関口に特徴のある大きな赤色の橋があります。修善寺橋です。修善寺駅から徒歩3分です。そのすぐそばに静かに佇む恰幅のいい地蔵があります。その名は「愛童将軍地蔵」。
800年前から修善寺を訪れる旅人を優しく見守り、 怒涛の時代、鎌倉時代に23歳の若さで短い生涯を終えた二代将軍・源頼家のために建てられた地蔵です。冷血で独裁的として恐れていた源頼家が鎌倉を離れた時、1204年にこの地で暗殺されました。
一方、里の子ども達や鎌倉に残した我が子を大変かわいがっていた将軍であったので『愛童将軍』とも呼ばれ、彼の死を知った地元の人々は悲しみ、浄財を集めて地蔵を建てました。
伊豆に来た際、まずは足を止め、ぜひ手を合わせてあげてください。

Aido Shogun Jizoson: the Jizo of love and sorrow
At the entrance to the city of Izu is a characteristic large red bridge. It is the Shuzenji Bridge. It is a three-minute walk from the Shuzenji station of the same name. At the side of the bridge, you may notice a peculiar statue. His name is Aido Shogun Jizo.
Jizo statues are made out of stone, which is said to have a spiritual power for protection and longevity that predates Buddhist beliefs.
This Jizo statue was built for Minamoto no Yoriye, the second shogun of the Kamakura period (1192-1333), who ended his short life at the age of 23. Minamoto no Yorike, feared for his cold, autocratic blood, was assassinated here in 1204 when he left Kamakura.
On the other hand, he was also known as 'Aido Shogun' i.e. the shogun who loved children, because he was very protective of the children of his village and the son he left behind in Kamakura.
If you visit Izu, stop and make a propitiatory prayer in front of it.
